What will I be doing?
As a volunteer teacher in Kenya, you are expected to not only provide interesting and exciting lessons for the children, but guaranteed to return to your home country having learnt a variety of skills and memories that you will treasure for a lifetime.
After being assigned to a school that fits your skillset and requirements, volunteers will be given an orientation on Kenya and the education system. After shadowing the local staff for a few days, you will assist the local staff with the teaching of the national syllabus as well as any additional extracurricular activities you would like to provide for that class. Your level of involvement with the lesson plans is entirely up to you. The amount of energy you put into your school teaching volunteer placement is also up to you! Where will I volunteer?
Our teaching volunteer placements take place in a variety of primary and secondary schools around Migori county. Migori county is known for its diverse landscape; bordering the Masaai Mara game reserve, Tanzania and the 2nd largest lake in the World, your school volunteer program location my either surrounded by sugar cane fields, overlooking the fishermen on Lake Victoria or completely interior surrounded by agriculture as their source of income. You can choose to work with orphans, children with disabilities, or a faith-based school, an international school, or where you’re guaranteed to learn Kiswahili during your placement. Depending on your particular interests and experience, will determine to which school/s you are sent to volunteer at. How long will the placement take?
Rieko’s school volunteer in Kenya programs are normally done in term time and for up to 3 months at a time. Feel free to visit all year round, however to get the best out of your teaching placement, prepare yourself to start in either January, May or September. Some of our schools offer 1 year placements, giving you the opportunity to travel around Kenya out of term time. Where will I stay?
Rieko teaching volunteers have a number of options when it comes to accommodation in Kenya. Choose between 1) host family, 2) shared volunteer house, or 3) hotel/B&B accommodation. Accommodation with a host family or in a shared volunteer house is most likely to provide you with an authentic Kenyan experience, however hotels are a good option if looking to venture into the bigger towns for larger teaching programs. Who can apply?
With Rieko, anyone can become a school teaching volunteer in Kenya. No teaching or TEFL qualifications are required, just a good command of the English language. All we require is that you have a passion for teaching children, and the ability to inspire others.
