Adult Education Volunteering

Kenya has a high ratio of under educated over 18’s in Africa. In fact, despite being one of the fastest growing countries in terms of technology, Kenya’s rural population are some of the most disadvantaged in the World when it comes to level of education with 21% having completed secondary school education.

Rieko requires volunteers to teach adults in the community in Kenya, skills that may help them get themselves and families out of poverty. Our adult education volunteer program creates a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the local community, in a variety of subjects and locations.

What will I be doing?
Our teaching adults in Kenya program is completely different from any other of Rieko’s programs. With the adult education volunteering program, it’s you who creates the syllabus, and you who deliver’s it. Rieko will give you the background information and the subject that is needed to be taught, and then it’s down to you to teach the adult community as you know best. Choose from programs such as:

  • Computer & ICT
  • Entrepreneurship & business management
  • Adult literacy
  • Adults with disabilities
  • Health education
  • English language

Where will I volunteer?
Our teaching volunteer placements take place in a variety of village locations around Migori county. Migori county is known for its diverse landscape; bordering the Masaai Mara game reserve, Tanzania and the 2nd largest lake in the World, your adult education volunteer program location may either be surrounded by sugar cane fields, overlooking the fishermen on Lake Victoria or completely interior surrounded by agriculture as their source of income. You can choose to work with women/men only, adults with disabilities, faith-based groups, sex-workers, fishermen, adult learning schools, or just seek out a mix of the local community. Depending on your particular interests and experience, will determine to which area you are sent to volunteer at. We can guarantee that wherever you volunteer, you will have an unforgettable experience! Contact our team today to discuss which location would suit you best!

How long will the placement take?
The length of your adult education volunteer placement is entirely up to you. Depending on the subject, durations range from 3 weeks, to one year. Subject to the syllabus that you wish to teach, and what you wish to achieve, may depend on how long your placement may last. Rieko want’s your adult education volunteer placement to make a difference to the community and therefore we will be on hand to make suggestions for your intended plans. Volunteering with Rieko will be one of the most exciting events that you ever do in your life!

Where will I stay?
Rieko adult education volunteers have a number of options when it comes to accommodation in Kenya. Choose between 1) host family, 2) shared volunteer house, or 3) hotel/B&B accommodation. Accommodation with a host family or in a shared volunteer house is most likely to provide you with an authentic Kenyan experience, however hotels are a good option if looking to venture into the bigger towns for larger adult teaching programs. Our Rieko team will discuss these with you after choosing the best adult education volunteer program for you.

Who can apply?
With Rieko, anyone can become an adult education volunteer in Kenya. No teaching or TEFL qualifications are required, just a good command of the English language. All we require is that you have a passion for teaching others, and the ability to inspire and motivate. Whether its teaching a women’s group about car engines, or some fishermen business management, prepare yourself for no two days ever to be the same!

What’s next?
