Teach children in Kenya about sustainable living! School farming will not only teach children how to grow food, but will teach children how to take responsibility for their livelihoods.
Rieko’s school farming in Kenya program looks at ways in which students can learn to sustain themselves. Whether its poultry farming, growing crops or mass produce for sustainability farming, you can be the person responsible for making a difference to schools in Kenya.
What will I be doing?
Rieko’s school farming in Kenya volunteer program is a thoroughly rewarding scheme which allows both the volunteer and the school children to benefit immensely. Each project is different, meaning that the volunteer will really be able to put their mark on the sustainability-building project.
Children will be able to learn how to grow different fruits and vegetables, trees, herbs and shrubs in order to form an edible garden, providing food for the school to eat (and perhaps even sell) in the future. Children will learn about seasonal growing, soil-types and growing conditions, as well as attract wildlife and nature in order for pollination.
As a school farming volunteer, it will be your responsibility to form a plan of what is to be taught in either the primary or secondary school. Rieko will be on hand to help if needed, however we want you to take ownership of the project. You will need to identify all that will be needed as well as source the specific seeds/plantings you wish to use.
Prepare yourself for a thoroughly rewarding volunteering programme which gives you free reign to make a difference to a community through a sustainable means.
Where will I volunteer?
Our school farming volunteer programs mostly take place in the rural areas of Migori County. Migori county is known for its diverse and beautiful landscape; bordering the Masaai Mara game reserve, Tanzania and the 2nd largest lake in the World. You can choose to participate in a farming volunteer program location either completely in the rural, overlooking the fishermen on Lake Victoria or next to the gold mines of Macalder amongst many other options.
Depending on your preference of location will be where you are sent to volunteer at. We can guarantee that wherever you volunteer, you will have an unforgettable experience! Contact our team today to discuss which location would suit you best!
How long will the placement take?
Rieko’s school gardening volunteering in Kenya programs are normally done in term time and for up to 3 months at a time. Feel free to visit all year round, however to get the best out of your school placement, prepare yourself to start in either January, May or September. Some of our schools offer 1 year placements, giving you the opportunity to travel around Kenya out of term time, or visit other projects. Other schools are more suitable for short-term volunteers offering placements for as short as 3 weeks. Contact our team today to discuss your school gardening volunteering program needs.
Where will I stay?
Rieko school gardening volunteers have a number of options when it comes to accommodation in Kenya. Choose between 1) host family, 2) shared volunteer house, or 3) hotel/B&B accommodation. Accommodation with a host family or in a shared volunteer house is most likely to provide you with an authentic Kenyan experience, however hotels are a good option if looking to venture into the bigger towns for larger school health programs. Our Rieko team will discuss these with you after choosing the best school gardening volunteer program for you.
Who can apply?
Anyone can apply for our school farming volunteering program, providing that you are aged over 18 years and have an interest in helping a community implement sustainable farming techniques. We also ask that you are somewhat physically fit as there may be a lot of walking involved depending on which program you choose to do.
